Losing Weight – Permanently

I’m annoyed with myself that I’m back at this point. I was at my goal weight, and I found myself at the point where the mind balks at the thought of doing this routine, this meal plan, this deprivation forever. I just gave up.

So, I’m determined to make it stick this time. I’m using My Fitness Pal to track my food choices but my caloric limit is 1600, so hardly deprivation. The purpose of tracking my calories is just to make sure I’m eating enough to maintain my muscle mass, not to restrict, otherwise I find I’m not getting enough protein and I’m too low on calories. The main method I’m using to control the amount I eat is through time. I’m eating inside an 8 hour window, and no snacking after 8pm (this is my weakness, especially when I’m tired).

I will be using the Body-for-Life Training System, which is Cardio 3x per week for 20 minutes (21 minutes) using HIIT, and Resistance Training 3x per week. Here is what this will look like.

Resistance Training:

Alternating Upper Body with Lower Body on a weekly basis, so one week Upper, Lower Upper. The next week Lower, Upper and Lower. This technique uses a personal difficulty scale of 1-10.

*EL is an abbreviation for Effort Level.

EL 6 (12 Reps).

EL 7 (10 reps)

EL 8 (8 reps)

EL 9 (6 reps)

Go down in weight to what was used for EL 8. Do 12 Reps.

Immediately switch to EL 7 weight and hit the same muscle group with a different exercise (example: bicep curls to hammer curls). Do 12 reps. Done.

Take a 2 minute break and move on to the next exercise. (Upper body will be chest, back, triceps, biceps and shoulders. Lower body will be glutes, hamstrings, calves, quads and abs.)

Cardio:

This system has only 20 minutes of cardio (HIIT) 3 days per week, starting at 2 minutes of warmup (should feel like an effort level of 5 out of a maximum of 10), then effort level 6 (1 minute), 7 (1 minute), 8 (1 minute), and 9 (1 minute). Return to level 6 for 1 minute of active recovery. Do this cycle 4 times (excluding the 2 minute warmup). For the last cycle, when you complete level 9, instead of dropping down to level 6, you go all out to an effort level of 10 (maximum effort) for 1 minute. On the stationary bike, this sequence is easily achieved with the difficulty settings. This sequence will also easily accommodate swimming and walking/running.

I’m going to pick up meditation again. I used to do it everyday for 30 minutes and I loved it. Why did I give it up?

I will also be aiming to drink around 64 oz of water per day.

I’m going to write down all my stats and take before and after pics. I’ll share them here when I reach my goal. I’m going to write a blog post per week on my progress to keep myself accountable.

If you’re trying this too, I wish you success and great results!

CBD is a Miracle

So I met a man at Costco, yesterday. He was selling this hugely popular brand of Turmeric liquid. Somehow we got on to talking about CBD for pain and anxiety relief. He said he’d been in an accident many years ago and had been jobless and on disability, until he’d been recommended CBD as a pain reliever. He purchased the CBD gummies and the CBD ointment, and he said it was like night and day. Why isn’t this talked about and recommended by our doctors? We have a huge opioid addiction issue in the US and still this is treated like it’s hype. This man was able to walk again without pain. He was able to hold a job again. We could have talked for hours, but Costco was closing and we had to get out of there (we being my husband and I). CBD is simply amazing.

CBD Works On My Anxiety

I am so happy to say that the CBD oil is working for me! I ordered two different brands and types, one which was a gummy but it made me feel very irritable and jittery, and the other which is a vape product and has been amazing. The CBD oil that I really like came in a kit. I had some issues with the battery not holding a charge, but the company was awesome and sent me out a replacement battery free of charge (I just had to pay shipping). This oil has no Vegetable Glycerin (VG) nor does it have (PG), so it doesn’t burn at all. Because there is no vegetable glycerin, there is very little vapor. It looks like a silver fountain pen.

When I use it, I remain clear headed, just really calm and focused. I’ve tested it out a few times, and it takes between 5 and 10 minutes for it to take effect. The calm feeling lasts 2-3 hours, whereas edibles don’t begin to work for 45 to 90 minutes, although they do last up to 8 hours. The brand I’m liking the most is Hemp Bombs, but their products can be expensive. They do offer some great deals and giveaways on Instagram, so if you’re interested you should definitely check them out.

Update: After several months of use, the downside I’m seeing is that my chest hurts, and I’m pretty sure it’s from the way I’m inhaling when vaping the CBD vape. I tested it by not using for a few days and it is definitely from my vapingĀ  “technique”. I’m thinking I’ll stick with the gummies instead of the vape from now on.

Managing Our Dog’s Pain With Curcumin

Over the last year, there’s been a steady decline in our sweet girl’s physical abilities, as well as her mental sharpness. She’s pretty old, a bit over 13 years, so I know this decline is considered “normal”, but I don’t think it needs to be this way. She’s always had bad hips, even as a puppy, but it had gotten to the point where we were needing to carry her up the stairs. The night time prowling, getting into the trash, not responding to her name, etc. were just not like her. She’s the most gentle dog I’ve ever known, and she’s a huge part of our family. We have many amazing family memories that she takes center stage in. Losing her now isn’t an option any of us are ready to accept, so we were super motivated to do something to help her regain at least some of her mobility, while lessening her pain as naturally as possible.

After researching the safety of using Curcumin in this way and speaking with our veterinarian, we order the Curcumin/Turmeric capsules, some vitamin E and some vitamin C. Every other day, we began adding a couple capsules of Turmeric, one capsule of vitamin E and 1/8th of a teaspoon of powdered vitamin C, blended into her food (sometimes with some tuna). As I understand it,  Curcumin is naturally anti-inflammatory, and vitamin E & C are antioxidants, and so minimize (even reverse) damage caused by aging. It is an incredibly powerful mix.

The results were pretty immediate; Within 24 hours she was getting off the floor without such a struggle, the late night wandering has lessened tremendously, and she is getting up the stairs without needing to be carried! I am so thrilled that these supplements have made such a huge difference in so short a time, so I’m sharing with anyone who is looking to improve their own fur baby’s quality of life (without the possible complications inherent with prescribed medications). I hope you have as much success with this as we have.

We ordered the Amazon brand of Turmeric/Curcumin and it has black pepper in it, which increases the effectiveness of it.

Update: We had our girl for 1 more year, using the Turmeric/Curcumin blend. Unfortunately, we lost her suddenly. She became very ill one night, and the next morning we brought her to our vet. She went peacefully under euthanasia, surrounded by her family. We miss her so much!

Benefits of CBD Oil

I’ve been spending quite a bit of time researching CBD oil. There’s so much to learn, and the more I read, the more I’m wondering, “Why in the heck isn’t this common knowledge?”

You can go into Google Scholar and type CBD oil. The studies on this are amazing, and there are so many benefits from using CBD, from Alzheimer’s all the way over to pain management, autism, and anxiety/PTSD relief. It works after spinal surgery for pain, it also works to alleviate pain caused by arthritis. There is so much more, and I’m still digesting it all.
